OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Projects, Drops AGI Easter Eggs

Can AI and Media Be a Power Couple? Only TIME Will Tell

Bringing another AIM prediction to light, on the seventh day of the ‘12 Days of OpenAI’ event, the company unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT called Projects. This tool allows users to upload files, set custom instructions, and tailor ChatGPT to suit the conversations within a specific project, as well as all other ChatGPT interactions.

“It’s rolling out, starting today, to Plus, Pro, and Teams users. We’re going to get it out to our free users as soon as possible, and it will come to Enterprise and Edu early in the new year,” said Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI. Interestingly, the feature was rolled out instantly during the live stream, and unlike previous streams, OpenAI didn’t crack any dad jokes.

“This is really just another organisational tool. I think of these as smart folders,” said Thomas Dimson, a member of the technical staff at OpenAI. Projects build on the recently launched ChatGPT conversation search, which enables users to review and search through past conversations in a textual format.

Drew Schuster, a front-end engineer at OpenAI, demonstrated the tool in a live demo by creating a new project. He showcased a fun example of organising a Secret Santa event, where participants were randomly assigned gift recipients and ChatGPT generated suggestions for festive gifts. He uploaded a spreadsheet containing participants’ gift preferences, and ChatGPT was able to extract the information.

In another use case, Dimson illustrated how the ‘Home maintenance project’ can assist users in tracking tasks around their homes. By uploading logs and appliance details, users can quickly access helpful information, such as whether a water filter in the fridge needs replacing.  “Users can now maintain their home projects more effectively. We’re all about making it easier for people to access the information they need when they need it,” Thomas said.

These project organization features also include Canvas, a tool for iterating and refining outputs, allowing users to collaborate with ease.

In comparison, Projects competes directly with Claude’s Projects feature, which lets users store and manage knowledge in the form of chats, files, and documents in one place.

Unsurprisingly, the demo included an Easter egg for AGI, with one of the projects on Dimson’s screen reading, “AGI (Don’t show on live…),” teasing viewers much like the fifth demo, where OpenAI intrigued its fans and users with a similar Easter egg. On the iPhone used for the demo, a calendar event titled “Super Secret AGI” appeared to be scheduled.

Sora, OpenAI’s latest video generation tool, launched this week but faced a delay due to unexpectedly high demand. It is now fully available to Plus and Pro users outside Europe, alongside other updates like Advanced Voice Mode with Vision.
