YC Startup Unveils Open-Source Graphical Interface for Claude Code

Asterisk, a Y Combinator S24-backed startup known for its AI tooling, has launched Claudia, a free and open-source graphical user interface (GUI) designed specifically for developers using Anthropic’s Claude Code. The desktop app is now available to build from source across macOS, Linux, and Windows.

The tool aims to solve a growing problem among developers working with Claude Code’s terminal-based interface. As Asterisk claims on its website, “terminal chaos” and the lack of session history or visual dashboards have made managing complex AI coding sessions tedious. Claudia is built to replace that with a unified GUI that supports project browsing, reusable agent creation, and real-time usage tracking.

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool by Anthropic, which was launched along with Claude 3.7 Sonnet. The tool lives in the terminal and helps developers code faster without requiring any complex setup. It has also helped Anthropic accelerate its internal development process.

Claudia introduces features like session time travel with checkpoints and branching, like chats in Git, integrated markdown editing, and sandboxed background agents—the latter still marked experimental. It also offers visual management of Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and token usage dashboards, all within a privacy-first, local-first design.

Built with Tauri, React 18, TypeScript, Rust, and Tailwind CSS, Claudia reflects modern developer sensibilities. “Every pixel crafted to make your AI coding workflow more intuitive and enjoyable,” the startup highlighted on its website.

Installation currently requires building from source, though native executables, particularly for macOS, are expected soon. Claudia is available on GitHub, and documentation can be found on its web page.

This launch comes amid growing interest in graphical tools for agent-based AI coding, particularly those built around Claude, which, according to the startup, still lacks official session management features like checkpoints. Claudia appears poised to fill that gap, with open-source flexibility in the mix.
