Texas Instruments (TI) has revealed plans to invest over $60 billion in seven semiconductor fabs across the US, marking the biggest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in the country’s history. The move aims to meet the growing demand for chips vital to industries ranging from automotive to data centres.
The new manufacturing sites in Texas and Utah will support more than 60,000 new jobs. The investment includes the construction of facilities in Sherman, Texas, where TI is investing up to $40 billion for four new fabs. TI’s first two fabs, SM1 and SM2, are already under construction, with two additional fabs, SM3 and SM4, planned for future expansion.
US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick highlighted the partnership’s importance, saying, “Our partnership with TI will support US chip manufacturing for decades to come.”
The project reflects the company’s commitment to bolstering domestic semiconductor production in collaboration with the US government, further solidifying its legacy as a global leader in technology and manufacturing.
“We are building dependable, low-cost 300 mm capacity at scale to deliver the analogue and embedded processing chips that are vital for nearly every type of electronic system,” said Haviv Ilan, president and CEO of Texas Instruments.
TI’s new fabs will produce chips essential for products like smartphones, vehicles, and satellites. Apple, Ford, Medtronic, NVIDIA, and SpaceX are among the companies strengthening their partnerships with TI to advance US innovation. “Texas Instruments’ American-made chips help bring Apple products to life,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said, highlighting the critical role of US manufacturing in future tech developments.
To this, Gwynne Shotwell, president and COO of SpaceX, said, “TI’s US-made semiconductors are crucial for securing a US supply chain for our products, and their advanced silicon manufacturing capabilities provide the performance and reliability needed to help us meet the growing demand for high-speed internet all around the world.”
The new sites in Sherman will be integral to TI’s efforts, with construction already underway on two fabs and plans for future expansion. In addition, the company is ramping up production in Richardson, Texas, and Lehi, Utah.
These will manufacture millions of chips daily, driving innovation across industries including automotive, healthcare, AI, and satellite communications. With these efforts, TI aims to support the US supply chain and position itself at the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing.
