Microsoft Brings Back Clippy as Expressive AI Assistant Mico

Microsoft Copilot for Security to be Generally Available Soon

Microsoft has introduced Mico, a new AI companion designed to bring personality and empathy to its Copilot assistant. Unveiled during the company’s Fall 2025 Copilot Sessions in Los Angeles, Mico is a floating, blob-shaped character that responds with real-time facial expressions, aiming to create a more engaging and human-like interaction experience.

The company said that Mico’s name is a playful nod to Microsoft Copilot, and it serves as the visual avatar for Copilot’s voice mode.

Unlike its predecessor Clippy, the animated paperclip assistant from the late 1990s, Mico is meant to be less intrusive and more emotionally intelligent. It adapts its expressions based on the tone and content of user interactions, providing a more personalised and supportive experience.

“This optional visual presence listens, reacts, and even changes colours to reflect your interactions, making voice conversations feel more natural. Mico shows support through animation and expressions, creating a friendly and engaging experience,” the company said.

In addition to Mico, Microsoft introduced new features in its Copilot Fall Release to make AI more personal, useful, and human-centred. The update focused on improving collaboration, memory, and connectivity across Microsoft tools.

The Fall Release included 12 new features, including Copilot Groups, which allows up to 32 users to collaborate in real time, share ideas, summarise threads, and assign tasks. The Imagine feature enables users to explore and remix AI-generated content collaboratively.

Copilot for Health provides grounded responses from credible sources such as Harvard Health and assists users in finding doctors based on speciality, location, and language. Learn Live offered voice-enabled, Socratic-style tutoring with visual cues and interactive whiteboards.

Microsoft also integrated Copilot into Microsoft Edge and Windows 11, allowing users to summarise open tabs, compare information, and take actions such as booking a hotel or filling out forms.
