IndiaAI Mission Partners with OpenAI to Launch OpenAI Academy Across India

OpenAI and the IndiaAI Mission under the electronics and information technology ministry on Thursday launched OpenAI Academy India, marking the first international rollout of OpenAI’s education platform, according to an official release.

The initiative aims to scale AI skills training nationwide, targeting a diverse range of learners, including students, developers, educators, government officials, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between OpenAI and IndiaAI, outlining key areas of collaboration. The OpenAI Academy India will support the IndiaAI Mission’s FutureSkills pillar, with training delivered digitally and in person, in both English and Hindi. Additional regional languages are expected to follow.

OpenAI will contribute its educational content to the FutureSkills platform and also to the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which is used for capacity building of civil servants.

The company will conduct webinars and in-person workshops in six cities, and provide up to $100,000 worth of API credits to 50 startups or fellows approved by the IndiaAI Mission.

Hackathons will also be organised in partnership with the mission, across seven states, reaching around 25,000 students. Winners will be invited to participate in OpenAI’s international DevDay. Moreover, OpenAI has committed to training one million teachers in generative AI tools and practices.

In a congratulatory message to OpenAI, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the release, “This is a significant step towards advancing our shared goal of democratising access to knowledge and technology. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is committed to ensuring that the benefits of cutting-edge innovation reach every citizen.”

“The launch of OpenAI Academy will strengthen India’s AI Mission by enabling greater community learning, fostering innovation, and accelerating the development of locally relevant solutions,” he added.

“India is one of the most dynamic countries in the world for AI development, with adoption and innovation accelerating at a remarkable speed,” Jason Kwon, chief strategy officer at OpenAI, stated. “We’re proud to partner with IndiaAI to launch OpenAI Academy India and help more people gain the confidence and skills to use AI meaningfully in their work, communities, and lives.”

The OpenAI Academy offers free access to videos, tutorials, hands-on modules, virtual events, and peer-based learning opportunities. Its expansion into India is part of a broader effort to make AI knowledge and tools widely accessible.
