Google’s NotebookLM Now Turns Research Into Narrated Videos

Google’s AI-powered research assistant, NotebookLM, is rolling out a set of significant upgrades, introducing Video Overviews and a redesigned Studio panel to help users better understand and share complex information.

Video Overviews, first announced at Google I/O, are now available in English. This new format turns dense material into narrated visual summaries using slides, diagrams, quotes, and data pulled directly from the user’s sources. Described as a visual counterpart to Audio Overviews, these videos are especially useful for explaining processes, breaking down data or making abstract ideas easier to grasp.

Users can tailor Video Overviews to their needs, choosing topics, specifying learning objectives or indicating their expertise level. From broad questions like “help me understand this paper” to targeted requests such as “focus on Z for my team”, the format is designed to support both beginners and experts.

Alongside this, NotebookLM’s Studio panel is getting a full redesign. Users can now create and store multiple outputs of the same type, a significant shift from the earlier one-output-per-format limitation. This allows more granular organisation of learning materials within each notebook.

The new Studio also introduces a cleaner tile-based layout for Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps and Reports. Outputs appear in a structured list below and users can now multitask within the panel, such as listening to an Audio Overview while reviewing other content.

These upgrades aim to support broader use cases like multilingual summaries for public notebooks, role-specific overviews for teams, or multi-format study guides for students.

According to Google, support for additional languages in Video Overviews will arrive in the coming months. The new features are gradually rolling out to all NotebookLM users starting this week.
