AI coding tool Cursor is now offering students a free one-year Pro subscription. The plan includes access to premium models, fast request limits, and unlimited slow requests.
Students can get started by verifying their status using a student email ID or submitting proof of enrollment by heading to the student page of Cursor’s official website. Once verified, users will be asked to provide payment details to subscribe to the Pro plan, which is free of charge for 12 months.
The plan will renew at its regular price unless the subscription is cancelled.
Existing Pro subscribers will automatically receive a refund for unused time, and the student offer will apply immediately.
The plan grants 500 fast requests per month to access premium models like Grok-3, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, GPT-4o, and unlimited slow requests. One can use unlimited fast requests for GPT-4o-mini or Cursor-small models. Users may also enable usage-based pricing, that requires them to pay for requests beyond the monthly cap for premium models.
AIM confirmed the offer by signing up with a verified student email. The verification process worked smoothly, and the plan was activated immediately.
Cursor noted that students can cancel at any time, but can retain access until the end of their current billing cycle.
This comes at a time when OpenAI has reportedly agreed to acquire Windsurf, another AI coding tool, for $3 billion. Windsurf has also tried to attract its young users by offering a 50% student discount earlier this year and introduced a ‘Codeium AI Fellowship’ program. One can join the program and collaborate with the Windsurf team to introduce the coding tool to the university through presentations, workshops, and events.
