ChatGPT’s Study Mode Was Inspired in India

ChatGPT’s new Study Mode feature was developed after the company’s team visited India and observed the country’s approach to education and tutoring.

Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s head of education, said the idea emerged during the trip. “Study mode came out of a trip our team took to India, where they realised a few things,” she said in a recent podcast.

She added that families in India were spending a large percentage of their per capita income on tutors and after-school help. She also said there was a strong desire among young people in India to get to the next level.

Based on these observations, the team began exploring how ChatGPT could be improved for academic support. “We began this journey asking what it would take to turn ChatGPT into an even better tutor than it already is,” Belsky said.

OpenAI’s recently launched Study Mode interactively guides students and learners through their questions, helping them understand and engage rather than simply giving answers.

The feature on ChatGPT is available for all users – Free, Plus, Pro, and Team – with availability in ChatGPT Edu coming in the next few weeks.

“When students engage with study mode, they’re met with guiding questions that calibrate responses to their objective and skill level to help them build deeper understanding,” said OpenAI in a blog post.
