OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a platform that helps biopharmaceutical companies coordinate drug development programmes, as the company expands its AI tools for life sciences research. OpenAI has not disclosed the acquisition terms.
The acquisition will bring Orchestra Bio’s team and technology together with OpenAI’s Rosalind, a suite of AI models and tools for life sciences researchers. The companies plan to develop AI agents that connect scientific findings with the studies, decisions, and workflows required to advance drug candidates.
“Together, we aim to build agents that help teams connect scientific findings with the studies, decisions, and next steps needed to advance a potential medicine,” OpenAI said in a blog post announcing the acquisition.
Drug development takes an average of 10–15 years from target discovery to regulatory approval. The process involves multiple teams, external partners, and interconnected activities, often managed through separate systems.
Orchestra Bio’s platform allows scientists and programme leaders to delegate the monitoring and tracking of studies to AI agents, freeing them to focus on scientific decisions and resolving issues that could delay development.
Founded in 2022 by Ashoka Rajendra, Orchestra Bio helps biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies manage the operational complexity of drug development. The company developed AI agents to track studies, monitor drug development programmes, and identify issues that could delay clinical trials or other stages of development.
The startup had raised about $20 million by 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria Ventures, and 8VC.
OpenAI said the acquisition would expand its efforts to apply AI across the drug development process. The startup said its GPT-Rosalind helps scientists investigate questions in biology and chemistry, while Rosalind Workbench connects AI capabilities with scientific tools and data to support research and experiment planning.
OpenAI is also working with pharmaceutical companies to apply AI to research and development. Its partnership with Novo Nordisk focuses on improving research and development and commercial execution, while its collaboration with Moderna involves using AI to translate insights from complex data into experimental workflows.
