On Thursday, September 17th, 2026, AI Now Co-Executive Director Amba Kak testified before the Monopoly Busters Caucus at the shadow hearing “AI Crossroads: Stopping Big Tech’s Race to Monopolize AI through Surveillance on Big Tech.” The hearing came amidst a frenzy of alarmist claims about the existential threat of AI and calls from within the tech industry itself for regulation. In her testimony, Ms. Kak warned against the AI industry’s vision to further centralize power within a small group of private actors, and called on our representatives to act to protect the public from the consequences of a surveillance economy. She outlined three recommendations:
- Go after root causes, not symptoms.
- Don’t let companies co-opt the solution space.
- End AI exceptionalism and enforce the laws on the books.
