AstraZeneca, a global biopharmaceutical leader, on Thursday announced the expansion of its global hub in Bengaluru with an investment of ₹166 crore. The new facility will create 400 jobs, bringing the total workforce at the site to nearly 1,300 employees. This expansion will support the company’s AI-powered innovation across research and development (R&D), global business services, IT, and digital health.
This marks AstraZeneca’s second major investment in India within the past year, following the expansion of its Global Innovation and Technology Centre (GITC) in Chennai. The combined workforce across AstraZeneca’s operations in India will now approach 4,000 employees, strengthening its capacity to deliver life-changing medicines globally.
“Our global hub in Bangalore is a strategic investment that will play a vital role in advancing AstraZeneca’s bold ambition to deliver 20 new medicines by 2030,” Jackie Crockford, vice president of Global Business Services at AstraZeneca, said.
The new facility will focus on several key priorities, including advanced clinical research, AI-powered healthcare solutions, data analytics to improve clinical trials and patient outcomes, and specialised support for global regulatory compliance and pharmacovigilance.
Magnus Nord, vice president of global patient safety BioPharma at AstraZeneca, added, “This hub enhances our R&D capabilities by connecting us with India’s exceptional scientific and technological expertise. The expansion will accelerate the development of innovative medicines and help us deliver across R&D, ultimately benefiting patients around the world.
“AstraZeneca’s investment reaffirms India’s leadership in science, technology, and healthcare, and is a testament to Karnataka’s robust life sciences ecosystem. This expansion aligns perfectly with our vision to create high-value employment opportunities while fostering innovation in critical sectors, making Bengaluru a global hub for biotechnology and R&D,” Karnataka’s health & family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said.
The Bengaluru global hub also underscores AstraZeneca’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The facility is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification and is powered by 75% green energy. It incorporates full wastewater recycling and IoT-enabled systems for optimised energy management, reinforcing the company’s efforts toward a healthier planet.
