Bhashini and CRIS Sign MoU to Build AI Solutions for Indian Railways

The Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to advance linguistic inclusion and foster AI-driven digital transformation.

They will collaborate on the development and deployment of a multilingual AI solution across railway platforms. The MoU was formally signed by Amitabh Nag, CEO of BHASHINI, and GVL Satya Kumar, Managing Director of CRIS, in New Delhi.

Commenting on the partnership, Kumar said, “This (partnership) will enhance accessibility, transparency, and efficiency in our passenger-facing services.”

Through this strategic partnership, CRIS-managed systems like the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) and RailMadad will be able to incorporate BHASHINI’s cutting-edge language technology stack, which includes Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text-to-Text Translation, Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Citizens can use 22 Indian languages to access essential railway services.

With this partnership, they focus on developing chatbots and voice assistants for multilingual passengers and creating real-time interaction, customer support, and enquiry systems.

“This collaboration will transform how millions of passengers engage with railway services daily. Through BHASHINI’s AI capabilities, we ensure that language is no longer a barrier to accessing vital public services,” Nag said.

BHASHINI is India’s national language translation platform. The partnership will scale services to provide multilingual support across cloud and on-premise infrastructure. This will ensure that passengers, whether using mobile apps, websites, or kiosks, can interact with the railway system in their preferred language.

BHASHINI was launched in July 2022 as a key component of India’s National Language Translation Mission (NLTM). The goal is to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for users across different languages and regions in India.
